Back Like It Never Left!

The much awaited return of one of the most watched sport around the world finally happened this past weekend with some classic encounters to kick it off. The English premier league is back.

The 2023-2024 season started on Friday with a match between the defending champions Manchester City against the newly promoted side Burnley, a match that saw the citizens former captain Vincent Kompany in charge of the host. Kompany received a warm welcome from  City's fans where he played for 11 years, winning four league trophies and was the captain from the center back position..

Pep Guardiola's side started where they left off with an emphatic 3-0 victory over promoted Burnley at Turf Moor on a troubling night for the hosts off the field in which a spectator was apprehended for throwing an object at City’s Rico Lewis and another was arrested for trying to run on to the pitch.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring with his first kick of the game, poking in Rodri’s back-post header with a sweeping left-foot volley and doubled his and City’s tally before half-time with a rasping, curling shot that cannoned off the underside of the cross-bar. Rodri sealed the deal in the second half with the third to win the match for the citizens.

City will host Newcastle next on Saturday while Burnley will have the weekend off after their game against fellow promoted Luton Town was postponed due to stadium works.

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge in a highly contested match where two goals were ruled for offside and the young Chelsea squad proved that they have a lot to offer in this new campaign. 

Mauricio Pochettino said Chelsea are "working so hard" on more signings after debutant Axel Disasi's equalizer secured a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge after an early goal from Luis Diaz in the Argentinian manager's first competitive game in charge of the club.

''We need to improve in all the areas if we want to be contenders," Pochettino told Sky Sports, adding that Chelsea would pursue the "best dynamic" among his players once the transfer window closes on September 1.

Chelsea will play Westham next on Saturday while the reds hosts Bournemouth on Saturday evening.

In Other matches, Arsenal beat Nottingham forest 2-1 at the Emirates stadium, Sherfield United lost 1-0 to Crystal palace, Bournemouth drew 1-1 with Westham, Brighton thrashed Luton town 4-1,Everton lost 1-0 to Fulham, Newcastle humbled Aston Villa with 5 goals to 1 while Brentford and Tottenham shared points in a 2-2 draw.

Manchester United survived with a 1-0 win over Wolves at the Old Traford thanks to Raphael Varane header. United displayed one of the most horrific performance to start the league even though they survived thanks to their new signing goalie Andre Onana who managed to keep them in the game saving several shots from going in.

The red devils visits Tottenham Hotspur next on Saturday while Wolves host Brighton on the same day.

The World Cup of shocks continued on Friday as wily Croatia dumped favourites Brazil out on penalties. Brazil are gone, out of the World Cup that they always seemed so likely to win. They were favourites in this game and likely would have been in all of the ones to come. That didn't matter to Croatia as they fought harder than before to eliminate the 5 times winners. If this were David and Goliath, and make no mistake, Brazil are a Goliath, then a penalty shootout is seemingly Croatia's rock, the great equaliser.
