Ghana Exits Afcon After A Shocking Defeat By Debutants Comoros.
The black stars of Ghana exited Afcon tournament in Cameroon unceremoniously after being beaten 3-2 by debutants Comoros.
This is the first time Ghana are knocked out at the group stages of Afcon after 16 years of being successful to the next round.
AFCON debutants Comoros who are placed at number 132 in Fifa ranking took the lead after four minutes through Ben Mohamed and things got worse for Ghana - who featured Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey - when their captain Andrew Ayew was shown a red card for a lunge on the keeper, which was checked by VAR and confirmed.
Things moved from bad to worse when Ahmed Mogni scored the second for Comoros in the 61 minute.
Richmond Boakye and Alexander Djiku scored shortly in the second half for Ghana to make it 2-2 but Ahmed Mogni claimed his second of the game with five minutes left to seal a famous win for Comoros.
The shock defeat for four-time champions Ghana sees them finish bottom of Group C and exit AFCON at the group stage for the first time in 16 years.
Ghana finished with just a single point and it is the first time in their history that the Black Stars have failed to win at least one group stage match having made 22 past visits to the finals
In other group C game, Morocco drew 2-2 with stubborn Gabon.
Morocco topped Group C with seven points, followed by Gabon on five, with both teams advancing from the group after their draw.
The Atlas Lions fell behind in the first half as Gabon's Jim Allevinah slid past the onrushing keeper.
Morocco's equaliser from the penalty spot by Sofiane Boufal after 74 minutes sparked a thrilling finale.
First, Gabon forced Nayef Aguerd into scoring an own goal before Achraf Hakimi curled home a free-kick.
Morocco will stay in the Cameroonian capital for their next game, against the best third-placed side from either Group A, B or F, on 25 January.
Gabon, meanwhile, will face Burkina Faso in Limbe as both sides kick off the Round of 16 on Sunday 23 January.
Other matches
Heavyweights Senegal failed to fire again and were fortunate not to concede a penalty in a 0-0 draw with unfancied Malawi.
The Lions of Teranga still finished in top spot in Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Senegal won the group with five points, despite scoring only once in their three matches via a late Sadio Mane penalty against Zimbabwe in their opening game.
Malawi and Guinea both finished with four points but the latter took second spot on the head-to-head rule.
The Malawians must now wait to see if they are one of the four best third-placed teams, who also advance to the next round.
Guinea reached the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations despite losing their final Group B match 2-1 against already-eliminated Zimbabwe.
Knowledge Musona's downward header and Kudakwashe Mahachi's low strike put the Warriors two up at half-time.
Guinea captain Naby Keita replied with a stunning goal in Yaounde, in a match which saw referee Salima Mukansanga make history.
The Rwandan, 35, became the first woman to referee a Nations Cup game.
The West Africans will now face the runners-up from Group F on Monday, 24 January but will be without Liverpool midfielder Keita, who will be suspended after picking up his second booking at the tournament.
