NEW SEASON,SAME OLD ARSENAL
Brentford made a clear statement with their return to the premier league after a 74-year absence with a memorable, magnificent victory over Arsenal at the Brentford community stadium on Friday league opener.
Thomas Frank's men were vibrant, skilful and energetic proving that they didn't come to the top to participate but to win and win even at the expense of big teams like Arsenal.
Sergi Canos broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when he drove low past keeper Bernd Leno at the near post, although Arsenal complained bitterly that the ball had gone out of play in the build-up but the goal was allowed.
Arsenal were toothless in their attacks not putting the expected pressure on the Brentford defence for an equaliser.
Only Emile Smith Rowe truly rose above the dull Arsenal squad, forcing a save out of Brentford keeper David Raya.
There was a slight improvement after the halftime with the introduction of Bukayo Saka causing problems, but just as it seemed like Arsenal could perhaps find a leveller, Brentford doubled their lead when a long throw-in was headed home by Cristian Norgaard with 27 minutes to the end of the game.
It was a shocking goal to concede for Arsenal and one that summed up what was a disastrous first night of what could be a very long season in north London.
The lack of creativity and aggressiveness in the gunners camp witnessed in the previous seasons is still the story on Friday night.
The gunners missed the services of their duo strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang through illness, but that was not an excuse for such a bitter defeat.
With games against Chelsea and Manchester City coming up, Arsenal needed to get off to a good start at Brentford, but instead they have dived into crisis mode after just 90 minutes of the new season, falling to a 2-0 defeat at their newly promoted hosts.
The Arsenal boss had the following to say when asked if the defeat would prompt some urgency in the transfer market.
Arteta said, when asked if the defeat would prompt some urgency in the transfer market. "we are very clear of what we wanted to do, of what our strengths are and where we can improve"
"I don’t think this performance shows anything different from what we’ve already seen."
"My focus [now] is with the players that we have, to try to make them play as best as possible and to try to find a way to win football matches."
They now have just week before they welcome reigning European champions Chelsea to Emirates Stadium and they simply must do something different if they stand a chance against the motivated blue army.
