CAMPUS HOBBIES

‘’All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’’. Hard work is necessary to achieve our goals in life, however concentration on work alone without setting aside time to relax makes a person dull .The human mind can work for a long time but it also needs time to relax to avoid being overtaxed. Our daily schedule is usually crowded with duties and assignment therefore one need to have time to relax and rechannel their energy for the task to come.
Hobbies therefore are those activities we do regularly in our leisure time for pleasure. They depend on what one prefer to be fun and pleasurable in accordance to his/her own field of passion, interest and expertise.people of the same age brackets usually tend to have the same hobbies because of the common interests.
There are tons of hobbies around the world but I would like to focus on campus student’s hobbies. Unlike secondary schools and primary schools, university curriculum is quite flexible and gives more time for students to engage in hobbies. For a good academic excellence, every student need time for hobbies to relax their mind after attending the long lecturers which are usually not less than two hours.
After close interview with few students in Moi university, I can confidently say that at least every student in university have a hobby which may involve physical activities and exercises while some are mental and involves  just brainstorming.
The following hobbies are practiced by university students;
i) Walking, hiking and cycling
Some students especially girls and first years in universities likes to walk just to push time and relax their minds. Unlike boys girls rarely involves in physical hobbies like sports therefore they prefer strolling around the campus just enjoying the nature and breeze. For example, Monica Akinyi,a first year student in Moi university acknowledges that she walks  to Kesses dam every weekend to see the dam as part of her hobby. Jason Mandela, a communication student in the school of information science however says that he prefers hiking as one of his hobbies and that he goes to hike after every two weeks. Cycling is also a common hobby among university students, they rather hire a bicycle at ksh 50 per hour and cycle around school than just being indoors doing nothing
Ii) Music
Music is emotions, it’s the sound track to some of the most intense memories in our lives our first love, our first kiss, heartaches and sorrows, life changing events, it can make you relive a special feeling and bring back a tidal of memories. Therefore most students spends hours just immersing themselves in their favourite music, they listen from their phones, their hoofer systems and some even prefers loud music therefore they attend clubs in and out from the campus. Some students even join music clubs to learn, play and pursue their interest in music.
iii) sports
Most students take up sports a hobby, there are various sports in campus including karate, soccer, hockey, wresting, volleyball, rugby, javelin, swimming, tennis, chess, badminton etc.sports helps students to keep fit and reamain healthy in school therefore good concentration in class .
iv)photography
Unlike in the past, nowadays you don’t have to own a camera to do photography, students use their smartphones to take pictures and video clips as they practice photography. There are tips and techniques to take beautiful pictures which you can also do as a hobby.
v) watching movies
Videos portrays our real life phenomena and the daily occurrence all over the world. Many students watch movies, TV shows such as soap operas, actions, animations, drama, science fiction and even reality shows as their hobbies. Students usually make a crowd in movie shops or Wi-Fi downloading the latest movies, series and sport videos to watch during their leisure time.
VI)reading
Most students shy away from reading non academic materials, however,Some students actually read as a hobby. They prefer reading novels, insyders, storybooks, magazines, and even newspapers as their hobby.
Vii)art and crafts
Some students do, arts and crafts which ranges from knitting to paper Mache, to painting, scrapbooking, drawing, quilting and many more.
Just like everything which has a merit must have a demerit, some students are involving themselves with some unhealthy hobbies like smoking, drinking and even excess partying. This kind of hobbies kill most of their time and its difficult to recover from. Some students abuse drug as hobby hence it impairs their judgement even as they try to concentrate on  their academic work.
Some hobbies are very addictive therefore students should be careful not to waste so much time pleausuring themselves rather tahn doing academic work.
Having considered the above hobbies, we can therefore agree that hobbies are important not only to students but also to any other person out there. Some people make a living out of hobbies therefore we should take those little things that brings smile to our face seriously. Just like Phyllis McGinley said’’ A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away’’.
